Serengeti Great Migration
Serengeti’s Great Migration is Africa’s most famous wildlife event and is often referred to as the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth with a massive accumulation of 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 gazelles, 1,200 miles in an annual race to search for enough water and green pasture for their survival. The huge migration herds attract massive lion prides and good numbers of cheetah and leopard. Elephant herds are also found throughout the park together with the full array of East African wildlife. It is very difficult to find game viewing of equal quality anywhere else throughout Africa.

The wildebeest spend the rainy seasons that of December – June in the volcanic open plains below the Ngorongoro Crater where the grass growth is most productive and nutrient contents high. Calving season is short and the predators cannot make a dent in the new-borns with such a sudden surge of food. When the monsoon rains stop in June, the plains dry out and the wildebeest move west towards Lake Victoria in search of pasture and water where by the plains become a harsh and dry semi-desert in which no wildebeest could survive for a long period of time thus through migration the wildebeest and zebra use the widespread of resources that can facilitate and build up such large numbers. |
