The Switerzland of Africa
Kigezi as known to those who occupied it before the colonialists and come the separation of power by creating many districts of Uganda now. Kabale was the seat of the former Kigezi District Administration. Its history dates as far back as 1889 when Uganda was still a British protectorate and was nicknamed ‘Switzerland of Africa’ because of the hilly nature and coldness.
It was consequently split into the four districts of Kabale and Rukungiri in the 1970s, and later Kisoro and Kanungu.
Ethnicity: Bakiga are the predominant inhabitants of Kabale. They occupy the counties of Ndorwa, Rubanda, Rukiga and Kabale Municipality, the largest urban area in Kigezi. Also others are Bafumbira of Kisoro , then the Bahororo most in Rukungiri that used to be known as Rujumbura county. Apart from being known to be the home of the stout and majestic, bold, and hard working Bakiga ethnic group, Kabale is also defined by green, interlocking and heavily-cultivated hills that range from 1,219 metres (3,999 ft) to 2,347 metres (7,700 ft) above sea level. It covers a land area of 1,864 square miles and has a population of about 600,000 people as projected from 2002 population census.
Wildlife :The district is home to the highly endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi National Park, for Uganda safaris and of the world’s most endangered birds such as the African hill babbler, cinnamon bracken warbler, chubb’s cistocola, doherty’s Bush shrike, malachite sunbird, Yellow belled waxbill, olive thrush, streaky seed eater, common stone chart, and grauers rush warbler. Lake Bunyonyi, the second deepest lake in Africa is found in Kabale.
At lake Bunyonyi The boat trip across the island was lovely as the lake is completely still and you can spend 5 days here relaxing at many islands of the 500 metre long islands with developed accommodation facilities. Will view and spend the next few days eating, sleeping and swimming in the lake (happily free of Bilharzia!).
Aa canoe boat ride will help you tour punishment island, where teen pregnancies would be dumped to die, also visit Sharps Island and Leper Island. Sharp was a doctor who set up a leper colony in the 1920s (on Leper Island of course) and his island is laden with English Thatched cottages, gardens and even a tennis court (bear in mind that it is only 150 meters long)
You can cross into Rwandan border and were via shore of Lake Bunyonyi. It is a large lake with 29 islands and can stay at Bushara Island.
The boat trip across the island is lovely as the lake is completely still and you spend the next 5 days in a tree house on the south side of the 500 metre long island
While at lake Bunyonyi can stay at Bunyonyi Overland, as it is popularly known, Here will find non-crayfish dishes to pick from for dinner. It is more than excitement your part; to have the Crayfish Masala. Wil have dinner by the lakeside, though it is colder than But hope will enjoy the breeze.
